As I monitor Twitter, I get to see the joy and frustration
associated with using WebEx.
I think because meetings are so important to people, WebEx can really evoke some emotion. I mean heck, it's typically work related and everyone wants to look professional; like they know how to work the darn computer. And when something goes wrong, it can really make you mad (I know, I've been there!).
So when Josh "Shua" Peters tweeted about a sound issue, I asked him to tell me what had happened (you can always ask us for help on Twitter).
Not only did he explain, but he sent in the fix. Here it is:
I was running the WebEx on my Vista computer using Chrome as the browser. Everything was fine during the webinar (and was enjoying WebEx I might add), but as soon as it was over I went to Netflix to watch an episode of 30Rock while I made some breakfast. Once the video loaded the sound was absent. I tried the same video in Firefox and it worked just fine so I tried Hulu, YouTube, and the video on the WebEx site. Nothing in Chrome had sound, but everything else did.
I ended up spending over an hour and a half troubleshooting something that ended up being very easy to fix.
In Vista, if you open the sound options (bottom right) there is a mixer option you can click on that gives you options for the sound volume of any program you have open. When I went into the mixer options while playing a video in Chrome I saw that the sound was set to 0. I turned it up and all was well. For some reason, when the WebEx ended, it set Chrome's volume to 0 in the mixer.
Thanks Josh - this is a great discovery and it is something
that we have shared with the tech support team. Do you have a tip or quick fix
for WebEx? Let us know! Share it here or on our Facebook page.
